PIX
PIX is an instant payment system developed by the Central Bank of Brazil. It enables real-time transfers between bank accounts and supports both one-time purchases and recurring subscriptions (through Pix Automático).
How does PIX work?
- Customer selects PIX: At checkout, the customer selects PIX as their preferred payment method.
- Payment details are generated: A QR code is displayed. The customer scans it or copies and pastes the code into their banking app.
- Customer approves in their banking app:
- One-time purchase: The customer approves the payment.
- Recurring offer: The customer authorizes the subscription. This single approval covers the initial payment and all future rebills.
- Real-time processing: The transaction is processed instantly, and funds are transferred between accounts within seconds.
- Payment confirmation: The customer sees the payment confirmation in their banking app.
Setting up recurring offers?Recurring offers must follow specific rules on billing intervals, trials and cancellations, or subscriptions may fail. Review Recurring payments with Pix Automático before configuring them.
Pre-select PIX as the default payment method (Hosted integration)
You can force PIX as the pre-selected payment method on the Vendo checkout page by adding the parameter pm=pix to your join link, as explained under Payment method parameters.
If your offers include recurring subscriptions, make sure they follow the rules described below. You can use the offers parameter to show only offers that are compatible with PIX.
Recurring payments with Pix Automático
Pix Automático brings recurring billing to PIX. Unlike credit card processing, it is built entirely around subscriptions rather than standalone on-demand payments: each individual payment is the result of an active, regulated subscription the customer has authorized.
Regulated by the Central Bank of BrazilPix Automático is heavily regulated and does not offer the same flexibility as credit cards. It operates under strict rules for billing intervals, amounts, scheduling, cancellations and retries, all described on this page.
Core concepts
- Subscription-centric flow: The customer must explicitly authorize a predefined subscription schedule before any recurring payment can be processed.
- Vendo-managed billing: Recurring payments can only be processed by Vendo's Payment Platform. Payments via API (S2S Payments) are not allowed.
- No on-demand MIT: It is not possible to run a Merchant-Initiated Transaction (MIT) outside the scheduled rebills.
- Fixed consent: The customer's consent is bound to the authorized schedule. Once a subscription is created, its schedule and recurring amount cannot be changed.
Supported billing intervals
Pix Automático only allows fixed, predefined intervals. Custom frequencies (e.g., every 14 or 45 days) are not permitted.
| Period | Recurring Interval |
|---|---|
weekly | Every week |
monthly | Every month |
quarterly | Every 3 months |
half-year | Every 6 months |
yearly | Every year |
Rules for dates and amounts
- No early scheduling: Payments cannot be scheduled earlier than the minimum timeline set by the Central Bank of Brazil.
- Price ceiling: A scheduled payment can never exceed the amount the customer approved during the initial authorization.
Supported offer types
Your recurring offers must follow one of these three flows.
1. Recurring offer without a trial
- Flow: The customer completes the initial payment and authorizes the subscription at the same time. The subscription start date is the first scheduled rebill date.
- Constraint: The next rebill date must follow one of the supported intervals (e.g., exactly 1 week or 1 month later). Custom intervals such as 15 or 23 days will be rejected.
2. Recurring offer with a paid trial
- Flow: The customer pays the trial price immediately and authorizes the subsequent rebills. The subscription start date is the first scheduled rebill date.
- Trial length: Because every rebill must be registered with the banking network several days before it is due, the trial must be long enough to leave room for that scheduling.
| Trial length | Supported |
|---|---|
| 4 days or more | ✅ Recommended |
| 3 days | ⚠️ Discouraged: some rebills may be rejected because the scheduling deadline can be missed |
| 1 or 2 days | ❌ Not supported |
RecommendationSet PIX trial offers to at least 4 days. Shorter trials risk failed first rebills, which cancel the subscription.
3. Recurring offer with a free trial
- Flow: The signup starts with a Vendo Free Transaction, and the customer authorizes the subsequent rebills.
- Constraint: The subscription start date is the day the free trial ends. The same rule applies: the first payment cannot occur sooner than 4 full days after registration.
Payment timing
- Advance scheduling: Every scheduled payment is submitted to the banking network 2 to 10 days before its due date.
- Execution window: Payments are processed on their due date between 00:00 and 08:00 BRT (Brasília Time).
Cancellations
- By the customer: Customers can revoke their authorization at any time, either in their banking app or through the merchant portal.
- By the merchant: Subscriptions can be cancelled at any time, but payments that are already locked in the banking network cannot be stopped.
Cancellation cutoffTo stop a scheduled payment, the cancellation must be processed before 22:00 BRT on the day before settlement. After this cutoff, the pending payment will still be collected; only the following billing cycles will be prevented.
Retry policy
If a recurring payment fails, Vendo automatically applies the retry policy mandated by the Central Bank of Brazil. Merchants cannot change it.
Limits
- A maximum of 3 retries within 7 consecutive days of the first failure.
- Retries can take place on a maximum of 3 distinct days.
Timing windows (BRT)
| Attempt | Window |
|---|---|
| Initial attempt | 00:00 – 08:00 |
| Retry #1 (same day) | 18:00 – 21:00, only if the initial attempt failed |
| Retry #2 and #3 | 00:00 – 08:00 on the following eligible days |
Restrictions during retries
- Fixed amount: The amount cannot be changed; it must match the original failed payment.
- Active subscription: The subscription must remain active. If it is cancelled or expires during the retry cycle, the remaining retries are stopped.
If all retries fail
- No further payment attempts are made.
- The subscription is automatically cancelled and expired.
